TurbineOne: Frontline Perception for our Public Sector Heroes
As always, here at XYZ we value insight and experience. It is not lost on us that the importance of these two qualities is nowhere more apparent than the frontlines. We’ve learned this a number of ways through the years – on a personal note, through Ross’ grandfather as the assistant Secretary of Defense under the Kennedy/Johnson administration as well as professionally, through our investments into Anduril and Peregrine. Not only has this given us a deep and learned gratitude for all those in service, but it has also led us to the conclusion that the very same cutting edge technology venture invests in for the private sector, should also be used to empower first responders.
It is surprising that these innovations, whether it be computer vision or machine learning, have not been robustly applied to mission success. That is why we are proud to partner with TurbineOne, the frontline perception company. Cofounder, Ian Kalin, has experienced firsthand in his years of service as a Counter Terrorism Officer in the U.S. Navy what it’s like to navigate dangerous situations with outdated tools. Him and cofounder, Matt Amacker (former Head of Applied R&D at Google), incubated TurbineOne at Sweat Equity Ventures with the firm belief that the “people serving our nation today deserve the best technology that the American commercial sector can offer.”
TurbineOne is already servicing Department of Defense organizations, including the U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force, and commercial players such as Siemens. These customers are deploying TurbineOne’s first product, its Frontline Perception System, which is a wearable AI that equips individuals with unprecedented situational awareness. The main principle behind the system is to break down data silos to employ better actions, much like any other enterprise team at an execution-oriented organization. Only here, the stakes are higher and the intelligence is delivered directly to the tactical edge.
This is a marked pivot from the traditional defense tech approaches that have focused on cloud deployments for decision makers in windowless rooms. TurbineOne is reversing this motion by concentrating on delivering essential intel to people on the ground, such as smart alerts that inform them of unforeseen dangers – again, this is not dissimilar to how enterprises have focused building for the end user. Their edge-deployable operating system not only makes this possible without the internet, but also has a massive market opportunity – any kind of sensor data can and will empower the modern day soldier.
Hence, we are excited to continue our work in tech-forgotten spaces, in this case the public sector, with our seed investment into TurbineOne and with Ross joining on as an executive board member. We firmly believe that the best technology teams are the most equipped to transform the public sector to the benefit of our national security – Ian and Matt are uniquely qualified to build out systems that accomplish this, starting with our individual heroes.
