TurbineOne: Maintaining Tactical Edge with Frontline Perception
Technology has always transformed how wars are fought and won, constantly shaping and reshaping the frontlines of every conflict. Whether we like it or not, the nature of war is becoming increasingly automated, speeding up everything from decision-making to resource deployment to demand for intelligence. We're seeing this every day in the conflicts the U.S. and our allies are involved in right now.
TurbineOne is helping us meet and keep up with this reality. In the 3 short years since their founding and our seed investment, a lot has changed globally – including how wars are fought. Conflicts are taking place around the world, most visibly in Ukraine, Israel, and Gaza, and all of these operations look and work much differently than they did for U.S. forces in Afghanistan. New conflicts are more dangerous, with asymmetric threats in more obscure arenas, continuing to raise the number of unforgivable civilian casualties. There are two ways this could go. Automated warfare could continue to make all of this even worse. Or it could help the U.S. become quicker, more thoughtful, and – most importantly – accurate in our efforts to keep frontline soldiers safe and build a more secure and humane world. We believe TurbineOne is setting us on this critical second path.
TurbineOne’s Frontline Perception System (FPS) gives every military branch the AI and ML capability of using no-code software to ingest and analyze escalating amounts of data from fragmented, on-prem sources. The goal: to allow soldiers and leaders alike to identify actionable intel live, exactly when it's needed to make better, more surgical choices. Regardless of the austere environment or connectivity, FPS handles real-time data-processing demands and surfaces the most pertinent intelligence to teams on the battlefield so they can maintain decision advantage with confidence. In the process, TurbineOne is making it possible for military members on the ground to leverage AI even in limited bandwidth environments.
When we first met TurbineOne founders Ian Kalin and Matt Amacker, we knew immediately that they were the team to tackle this daunting task. The impetus to build the Frontline Perception System was initially born from Ian’s own experiences serving as a counter-terrorism officer in the Navy. At the time, he had wished for an on-body solution to identify actionable intelligence in real time. Faced with a firehose of data sources from intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance across different environments and domains, he had to make snap decisions without all the information he knew he wanted. After departing the military, this was what he most wanted to change for others.
The battlefield has changed to such an extent that frontline soldiers today don’t want to go into the battlefield without their true FPS armor to protect them. Furthermore, with the advent of drone swarms and advancements in reconnaissance, TurbineOne has expanded from on-body devices to on-drone devices to maintain the U.S.'s tactical edge necessary for setting the standard for global defense. With them in the lead, we have conviction in our country's ability to keep soldiers safe, maintain responsible governance, and take a smarter, more supervised approach to threats.
We couldn’t be more proud to be early backers of TurbineOne and to continue our support by participating in TurbineOne’s latest $15M Series A, led by Bessemer Venture Partners, to empower frontline soldiers. At XYZ, we value technology that will ultimately shape a safer, more secure world for everyone, and we couldn’t ask for better than partnering with teams like TurbineOne, who are on the forefront of this mission.
